FIRST EVER BIBLE IN GUJARATI - in 1823 AD

Introduction.

God desired to talk to the sinners of the world. It was God's way of talking to the world through this word : The word of God - the Holy Bible is God's special Book. It was written by many different people, who wrote by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

It was originally written in three languages - Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. With our present knowledge it would be difficult to name all the inspired writers of Bible. The 39 Old Testament books were written during a period of a thousand years, beginning about 1100 B.C. The 27 New Testament books were written in less than a hundred years, between about A.D. 40 to A.D. 100.
Being the world's best seller. It consistently outsells any other Book.
The Bible has been translated into more languages than any other book in the world. It has been translated by dedicated people so that common man can have God's words, thoughts and plans in his own language at the price he can afford.

THE TRANSLATION OF THE BIBLE IN GUJARATI LANGUAGE.

In the beginning of the 18th century Rev.Shult a missionary to India decided to translate the Bible in Gujarati language. In 1809 Rev. William Carey, with the help of a Hindu Pandit started the work of translation. The missionaries from the London Missionary Society - Rev.John Taylor, Rev.James Skinner, Rev.Fyuie also begun work on Gujarati Translation. It was not an easy job. But by the year 1817 the first books of Moses and the New Testament were published.
To facilitate the task of printing Bible the Surat Mission Press was opened in 1820. It was the first printing press in Gujarat. The Old Testament was published in 1823, and the complete Bible in four large volumes in 1829. From the first the work of Bible translation and printing in Gujarat owed a great deal to the British and Foreign Bible Society founded in London in 1804. Its branches being opened at Calcutta in 1811, Colombo 1812, Bombay 1813 and Madras 1821.
The British and Foreign Bible Society worked till the year 1944 in India. The very same year the Bible Society of India was established with her headquarter in Bangalore. And in the year 1969, 7th December, Gujarat Auxiliary of the Bible Society of India was opened at Ahmedabad. Till today, the Gujarat Auxiliary has been working on the Translation, Distribution and the Publication of the Bible and its portions.

Currently we have nearly 70 translation projects in India undertaken by translation department in our head office, Bangalore.
